NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 15-year-old was bitten by a shark Wednesday in Volusia County, but lifeguards said the shark was provoked.
The teen was surfing near the inlet jetty in New Smyrna Beach when lifeguards said he jumped off his surfboard in chest deep water and onto the shark.
The shark then retaliated by biting the teen on his foot.
The 15-year-old was taken to the hospital and had to receive several stitches.
“He was bleeding real good but they had him wrapped up, but he had some deep lacerations on the top of his foot as well as the bottom,” said beachgoer Tammy Zettle.
This is the 14th shark bite of the year in Volusia County. It’s the second one the beach patrol said was provoked.
