TALLAHASSEE -- A man who spent 24 years behind bars for a crime he didn't commit is a step closer to being paid for that nightmare.

The state house voted unanimously to award Alan Crotzer $1.25 million. That is $50,000 for every year he spent in
prison. Crotzer also would be eligible for free education, which he said he wants to pursue.

The bill still needs Senate approval and Gov. Charlie Crist is supporting the measure.

Crotzer was freed in 2006 after DNA evidence proved he wasn't involved in a 1981 armed robbery and rapes.

Crotzer said the money will help, but noted he couldn't get his life back.
