With the holidays quickly approaching, many have planned to go to holiday parties and celebrating with family and friends.
Officials said it is important to choose a designated driver before the festivities if you plan to drink alcohol.
Many parents who have lost children to drunk drivers attended a candlelight vigil Friday night, held by the Central Florida chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
Anna Redgate from Ocala delivered a speech at the vigil. She told News 13 she is now on a crusade against drunk driving after her 9-month-old daughter, Grace, was killed on New Year's Day in 2000 as she and her children were trying to cross the street.
"She was sitting next to her brother in a double jogger, and the impact nearly tore her completely in two," Redgate said. "Looking at the autopsy reports about six inches holding her together on her stomach, and it just devastated her, right in front of me."
The advocacy group MADD said last year, more than 17,000 people were killed in traffic crashes involving drivers with a blood alcohol count above the legal limit.
