The Cocoa High football team has taken the word domination and ran with it. The Tigers have outscored their opponents 407-71. After a thrilling overtime victory against 2B powerhouse Jacksonville Bolles, Cocoa puts their amazing season behind them to start a new one.
If the lion is the king of the jungle, the tiger is right behind it. Cocoa High personifies it's Tiger mascot--it's strong, fast and elusive. They've flexed their muscles against all 10 opponents leaving them perfect during the regular season. They're positioned players evade defenders at all cost. But Cocoa will be matched speed for speed against the Jones High Tigers.
"Our speed comes from our offensive line. They block for us and we get out in open area. So as long as our line gives us creases, backs block for ur, I think our speed will beat their speed," said Quarterback Matthew Younger
"As the offensive line we don't want anybody to touch the quarterback or the running back. We talk about that everyday, to take pride in what we do," Tigers Offensive Lineman Donald Patrick added.
Cocoa High Head Coach John Wilkinson is game planning for the first round of the playoffs.
"When you got speed on speed, you gotta execute. You gotta be the person who doesn't commit turnovers, give up the big play and make sure you're in the right spot," Wilkinson said.
The Tigers are in good position this playoff season having been there before just last year in their journey to the school's first ever state title.
"This year everyone came with their best game every week. We had to realize that. It's not an easy task but I think we're trained by the coaches. They do a good job of telling us to keep our heads small," Younger added.
Quarterback Matt Younger says the love of football pushes his teammates to play hard. But it's another "L" word that drives them to be perfect each week.
"Nobody wants to lose. We don't like to say the "L" word as we say around here."
"Our goal is to win state," said the Tigers Free Safey E.J. Johnson.
They've got five games to get there.
