It's rare, but one in 100,000 children could develop a a dangerous cyst -- a cyst if not taken out -- could lead to cancer.
Just about a month ago, 3-year-old Parker got really sick.
Mom took him to the emergency department thinking he just needed an IV to help him get better, then she found out...something was terribly wrong.
"It was so quick. They knew it was serious and I didn't believe it because he was going around saying 'hi I'm sick.' But within 30 minutes they told us he's really sick," his mother said.
Parker had a cyst on his bile ducts.
Take a look at this -- your bile ducts are long tube like structures that carry bile -- bile is required for your digestion of food.
That cyst caused Parker vomiting and some severe abdominal pain.
If Dr. Anderson didn't remove it, it could have turned into cancer.
The cyst had been identified and was removed laparoscopically. You might think it would be as simple as that, think again.
The surgery took five hours to complete.
"Actually removing the cyst was easy...but it's the reconstruction that took so much work....so that the bile can find it's way to the intestine."
Dr. Anderson had to rebuild the drainage for Parker's liver using his intestines.
He recovered well and is now even proud to show off his new belly button and the tiny little marks left behind.
Mom knows they are lucky.
"I just feel blessed every day."
The moral to this story for you to take away: If you suspect something is wrong with your child -- see the doctor. In this case, if Mom didn't take Parker to the Emergency Room -- it could have been much worse.
any adverse reactions happen.
