The Historical Society of Central Florida and Central Florida News 13 presented history in the making on May 7 at the Orange County Regional History Center in Orlando.
This year, the historical society recognized three history makers: Past, Present and Future.
Present Award: Charles Gray
Gray was feted by special guest speaker Glenda Hood, who is the former Florida Secretary of State and the former mayor of Orlando.
J. Charles Gray is a native of Central Florida who is the chairman of the board and founding director of the GrayRobinson law firm.
Past Award: Dr. Philip Phillips
Phillips began buying land in Orlando in 1897 for citrus groves and development.
His patented process for canning citrus juice revolutionized the industry.
Future Award: Eliya Wing
The recipient of the 2008 John Young History Maker Future Award, which includes a $5,000 scholarship, was Eliya Wing.
Wing is a graduating senior and honor roll student at Apopka high school, who will be attending the Georgia Institute of Technology majoring in aerospace engineering.
"If you saw this young woman's resume, you would be dumbfounded by what she has accomplished. We're looking at a real history maker in the making," said John Young during the May 7 ceremony.
The scholarship goes to an outstanding Orange County public high school graduating senior who plans to attend a four-year university and major in the sciences.
The John Young History Maker event is the Historical Society’s largest fundraiser. Last year’s event raised nearly $90,000 to fund exhibits and educational programs.
